“The reason Peterson is so appealing is precisely because modern psychology and therapy isn’t making things better.”

You’re mistaken here, with respect, because while you’re right to say that depression, etc., are growing problems, you’re wrong to attribute that to the ineffectiveness of modern psychotherapy. There’s abundant scientific evidence now to prove the efficacy of cognitive therapy for conditions like depression — that’s virtually beyond question. The increased rates of depression are probably due to multiple societal factors and the failure of psychotherapy to compensate for that is probably due more to the limited access people have to cognitive therapy rather than to its lack of effectiveness because we do know that evidence-based psychotherapy protocols work for the majority of people.

Some people report anecdotally that they’ve had years of ineffective therapy but, in my experience, that’s often, but not always, because they’ve not had access to therapists who are qualified and experienced in using treatment protocols that are actually evidence-based. Of course, some do and don’t benefit anyway. Nevertheless, statistically, we know that most people can benefit from CBT for depression and other common emotional problems.
